Magikarp requires food to grow strong in Magikarp Jump. Food can be upgraded in the coin shop. You also need coins to upgrade food.
Each food item is better than the ones before it if they are at the same rank. However, for example if the 
Oran Berry is at rank 25, it will be better than a rank 1 
Sitrus Berry.
The maximum number of food items that will spawn in the pond is twelve. Acquiring the Important Sign (by beating Battle #1 in the second league (Quick League), Mayor Karp explains to the player about Pond Decorations and rewards the player with the Important Sign) will increase this maximum food by +1. Purchasing the Substitute Plush for 300 Diamonds will increase the maximum food by +2 (thus having both the Important Sign and the Substitute Plush will increase the maximum food that will spawn in the pond to 15). Getting the Food Fever random event or using Snorlax's special move Leftovers can temporarily increase the number of food items in the pond over the maximum number, however no new food items will spawn in the pond until your Magikarp eats food items so that the number of food items in the pond is at least one below the maximum number of food items that your pond can contain.
When upgrading food, every 25 ranks rewards a 
Support Candies x 1.
